FACULTY TAKE CENTER STAGE

The spotlight was shining on faculty during Cougar football and basketball games as Provost Dan Bernardo honored Featured Faculty members. The program’s second year featured two WSU faculty members at each football game in Martin Stadium, and one faculty member at men’s basketball games in Beasley Coliseum. STATE OF THE UNIVERSITY

President Kirk Schulz addressed the University community last month, laying out WSU’s vision for the Drive to 25 and publicly launching the initiative. The University Address was followed by a question-and-answer session, along with a reception.

The Drive to 25 is an institutional initiative to achieve recognition as one of the nation’s top 25 public research universities by 2030. You can watch the full address online.

SURCA ON TAP FOR MARCH 27

The sixth annual Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities is slated for Monday, March 27 in the CUB ballrooms.

The Office of Undergraduate Education is proud to sponsor the event, which highlights undergraduate research and hands-on learning experiences. Faculty and staff serve as SURCA judges and mentor students through their projects, and several private companies support the event through sponsorships.

Faculty are encouraged to serve as judges. Find more information and how you can get involved with SURCA at surca.wsu.edu.

COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS

The Murrow College of Communication offers a unique hands-on experience through its Backpack Journalism program. The donor-funded trips give students hands-on experience in their field and a chance to test their classroom knowledge and skills within another culture. Watch as WSU students talk about their 2016 Backpack Journalism trip to Nepal.

The College of Pharmacy’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program received a boost with a $27,000 grant from the American Society for Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics. Kathryn Meier landed the grant, which funds the hands-on research experience program, and WSU faculty lead the projects while serving as mentors for the SURF students.

A team of 16 students in the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture completed a semester-long project to improve a Coeur d’Alene Indian Tribe tribute site. The team completed landscape architecture designs to highlight the heritage and future of the tribe at a sculpture park near the confluence of the Spokane River and Lake Coeur d’Alene.
