ANOTHER STELLAR CLASS OF COUGS ON THE WAY

The Office of Enrollment Management is putting the final touches on the incoming freshman class, and early indicators show an excellent group of students on their way to WSU. Academic preparation of incoming students continues on an upward trend, and the class exemplifies our land grant principle of educational access.

GRANT TO FUND NEW SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM

The Cougs Rise summer bridge program is preparing for launch after the Office of the Provost landed $2.6 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Education.

The student success initiative is designed for incoming first-year students who are low-income and/or first-generation. Cougs Rise will serve at least 120 students each year and will build on existing partnerships with five high schools in Washington: Bremerton, Fort Hudson (Vancouver), Rogers (Spokane), University (Spokane Valley) and Wenatchee.

The Office of the Provost welcomes your nominations for WSU Faculty awards.

Recognize the outstanding work of your colleagues, supervisors, and mentors by nominating them for an award. Nominations are due September 29, and are open in nine different categories.

COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS

WSU faculty in the Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health oversee a rabies eradication program in East Africa that is aiming to wipe out the deadly disease, and provides a model for controlling other diseases. WSU Regents Professor Guy Palmer has led efforts to immunize more than one million animals, and the ultimate goal is to eliminate the disease by the year 2030. Students and faculty from WSU helped to fight iron deficiency among people in rural Guatemala during a 10-day project in May. Kathy Beerman, a WSU professor in the School of Biological Sciences, led students from the Murrow College of Communication in assessing the effectiveness of a health project designed to increase iron levels. The medical service project was conducted in collaboration with Hearts in Motion, a nonprofit organization. Read more about the hands-on volunteer project.

Three WSU College of Pharmacy students brought home the top prize for their research project proposal at the national Student Pharmacist Compounding Competition in Florida. Kimberly Paulson, Shauna Leggett and Megan Baker took fourth place among 18 teams in the overall competition, but their proposal was awarded first, and earned the College a valuable piece of compounding lab equipment known as a Mazerustar, a specialized electronic prescription mixer.
