PAUL G. ALLEN SCHOOL FOR GLOBAL ANIMAL HEALTH PROFESSOR NAMED TO NATIONAL ACADEMY OF MEDICINE

M. Kariuki Njenga, country director for WSU Global Health-Kenya, has been elected a member of the National Academy of Medicine. A professor of virology and global health in the Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health, Njenga is the 11th WSU faculty member elected to the National Academies, and the third from the Allen School to receive the honor.

HONORS COLLEGE BRIMMING WITH SCHOLARS

WSU’s Honors College welcomed a record-breaking class of first-year students to campus this fall. The class includes a record 14 National Merit Scholars among the 290 students overall. The College is a key component in the Drive to 25.

WSU SETS RECORD ENROLLMENT

A record 30,614 students enrolled at Washington State University this fall, an increase of 1.6 percent over 2016. The increase was reflected across all of WSU’s campuses, including a 17.5 percent increase at WSU Everett. WSU’s student population grew in diversity, with minorities representing 29.1 percent of overall enrollment.

COLLEGE HIGHLIGHTS

Murrow College associate dean Jeff Peterson and faculty member Chris Cooney developed a two-week course for 25 students in the Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program. During their time in Pullman, the students created short videos related to a designated United Nations Sustainable Development Goal and presented them to an audience of peers, host families, International Programs staff and university administrators.

Peter Christenson, assistant professor of fine arts at WSU Tri-Cities, was recognized with the Governor’s Arts & Heritage Young Arts Leader Award from the Washington State Arts Commission. Christenson teaches in support of the fine arts and digital technology and culture programs with a focus on multidisciplinary, new media and social art practices.

Tory Knebel is the latest WSU Pharmacy student to be appointed to serve on the Student Leadership Council for the National Community Pharmacists Association. Knebel will represent NCPA student chapters from all over the western United States, and is the ninth WSU College of Pharmacy student to serve as a NCPA’s Student Leadership Council in as many years.
