Vice President for Research
Distinguished Lecture
Anne Harrington
Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation
National Nuclear Security Administration
U.S. Nuclear Nonproliferation Program, its Challenges, and the Role of a Research University
Anne Harrington serves as deputy administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). The mission of the NNSA is to maintain and enhance the safety, security, and effectiveness of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile without nuclear testing; work to reduce the global danger from weapons of mass destruction; provide the U.S. Navy with safe and effective nuclear propulsion; and respond to nuclear and radiological emergencies in the U.S. and abroad. Under Anne Harrington’s leadership, her staff are on the front lines fighting nuclear terrorism and proliferation every single day, keeping us safe at home and abroad.

Anne will present an overview of U.S. nonproliferation policies and supporting activities, including the Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT), Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), and actions taken since the fall of the Soviet Union, particularly Cooperative Threat Reduction (Nunn-Lugar), and more recently the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran. Her lecture will also include insights into how the U.S. and international community address weapons of mass destruction security threats, and the role that university research plays in supporting the NNSA’s mission.
