Palmer discusses the fabric of her Fulbright

Fine arts associate professor Io Palmer is in New Delhi, India, after receiving a Fulbright‑Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Award. Her prestigious grant was the result of years of inspiration and observation, followed by persistent writing, rewriting, and editing. The result will be her multimedia project, “Created, Consumed, and Scrubbed.”

Showcase to feature WSU award winners

Psychology professor Maureen Schmitter‑Edgecombe will deliver the 2019 Distinguished Faculty Address to highlight Showcase, WSU’s weeklong celebration of academic excellence. The Office of the Provost recently announced the faculty and staff who will be honored at the Celebration of Excellence Banquet on March 29.

Strategic Plan dialogue sessions continuing

Faculty, staff, and students are invited to contribute to WSU’s next strategic plan through dialogue sessions being held throughout the month. University leaders are meeting with constituent groups to discuss the themes, goals, and objectives that should be included in the next strategic plan, which will guide WSU through 2024.

Explore OER through grants and workshops

Faculty are invited to explore open educational resources (OER) at faculty‑led workshops next month, and the Office of the Provost is inviting proposals for Affordable Learning Grants to adapt or create OER for their courses. The workshops on March 5 and 6 are excellent preparation for submitting proposals, which are due March 18.

College Highlights

Manoj Karkee, associate professor in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering, was one of eleven scientists in the United States and Canada named as a 2019 Pioneer in artificial intelligence and the “Internet of Things” by Connected World magazine. Karkee was honored for his innovations and discoveries contributing to increased productivity and conservation of resources on Northwest farms and orchards.

Deborah Compeau, professor of information systems in the Carson College of Business, was named a fellow of the Association for Information Systems. She was recognized for her outstanding contributions to the field of information systems through research, teaching, and service, and was one of eight awardees for 2018.

Kimberly McKeirnan, a clinical assistant professor in the College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, will be honored with a 2019 Distinguished Achievement Award in Pharmacy Practice from the Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management. McKeirnan was selected for her efforts to increase access to vaccinations and also earned a 2019 Immunization Champion Award from the Academy. She will receive her awards at the APhA meeting in Seattle in March.
